The Lakshadweep administration has recently put new rules in place for tourism. These rules mean that all tourism businesses must register. If a business was already operating, it has six months to register or get the right approvals. The new rules also say that businesses must follow strict safety guidelines.
To protect the environment, the new rules have strong penalties for damaging coral reefs or working in areas where it is not allowed. Fines for these actions can be between ₹50,000 and ₹5 lakh. It is also against the rules for travel agents or tour guides to ask for secret tips or commissions. Littering, dumping waste, anchoring boats on coral reefs, or collecting protected sea animals are also strictly forbidden.
In a separate change, the administration made it simpler for tourists to enter Lakshadweep starting April 29, 2026. Visitors no longer need a local person to sponsor their trip or a police clearance certificate from where they live. This change is meant to make travel to the islands easier.
Even with the easier process, all non-islanders, including Indian citizens, still need an entry permit. Applications for these permits must be sent in at least 14 days before the planned trip. Tourists can only visit the specific islands and on the dates written on their approved permit. If they need to pass through Kavaratti or Agatti, they can only stay for a maximum of 12 hours.

Environmental Protection in Tourism
Environmental protection in tourism means putting rules and practices in place to make sure that visiting beautiful places does not harm nature. This includes protecting animals, plants, and natural features like coral reefs. It often involves preventing littering, controlling where people can go, and making sure businesses operate in a way that is good for the environment.
Government Regulations
Government regulations are official rules made by a government to control how things are done in a country or region. These rules help keep people safe, protect the environment, and ensure fairness. For example, a government might make regulations about how businesses should operate or what documents people need to travel.
Entry Permits
An entry permit is an official document that gives a person permission to enter a specific place, like a country, a state, or a protected area. It helps authorities keep track of who is entering and leaving, and sometimes ensures that visitors understand and follow local rules. Even citizens of a country might need an entry permit for certain special regions within their own country.
