Captain Smit Machchhar is being called a hero for his actions during a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. On October 3, 2026, UAE prosecutors confirmed that the co-pilot, Hamam Alhammami, attacked Captain Machchhar with a crash axe. Prosecutors described this as a "terrorist attack."
The co-pilot reportedly tried to take control of the aircraft, which was carrying over 170 passengers, including children. The attack happened while the plane was in Saudi airspace, causing the airliner to drop 16,000 feet (about 4,900 meters) in just 30 seconds.
Despite being injured, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. This allowed other crew members and passengers to come into the cockpit and help overpower Hamam Alhammami. Captain Machchhar, speaking from a hospital bed in Abu Dhabi, described blocking axe blows to his head and calling for help.
After the co-pilot was stopped, two other relief pilots on board took control of the aircraft. They diverted the flight to Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. A dentist on board also provided important help to Captain Machchhar.
UAE public prosecutors launched a criminal investigation on October 1, 2026. They stated that the co-pilot's plan was inspired by the September 11, 2001, attacks. An investigation is ongoing to find out if Hamam Alhammami acted alone or had connections to extremist groups. Reports suggest that Alhammami, an Omani co-pilot, had previously been prevented from flying from Oman in 2024 due to concerns about extremist views, though he was allowed to continue working for the airline in an administrative role.
Knowledge Vault
Cockpit Security
The cockpit is the area at the front of an aircraft where the pilots sit and control the plane. It has special security measures, like reinforced doors, to protect the pilots and prevent unauthorized people from entering during a flight. This is very important for the safety of everyone on board.
Terrorist Attack
A terrorist attack is an act of violence, often planned and carried out by a group or individual, to cause fear and achieve political or ideological goals. In this story, UAE prosecutors confirmed the co-pilot's actions were a "terrorist attack" because of his alleged intentions.
Flight Diversion
Flight diversion happens when an aircraft changes its planned route and lands at an airport different from its original destination. This can happen for many reasons, such as bad weather, a medical emergency on board, or, as in this case, a security incident requiring an immediate landing.
