A strong earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.0, struck the Tibet region of China on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The earthquake occurred at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time.

The earthquake's epicenter was located in a high-altitude, sparsely populated county within Nagqu, northern Tibet. It was about 183 to 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu city and 390 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, the regional capital.

Initial reports confirmed at least 16 fatalities and 54 injuries, with 11 people in serious condition. More than 339 houses were reported to have collapsed. Rescue teams were quickly sent to the affected area, and over 1,600 people from the local county were involved in rescue efforts.

In response to the disaster, China activated a level-II emergency response, which is the second-highest level. Supplies such as 1,000 prefabricated housing units, 3,000 tents, folding beds, flashlights, and winter clothing were dispatched to the region to help those affected.

The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported the quake's depth at 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), classifying it as a shallow earthquake. Another source, seismic data, indicated a depth of 173 kilometers. This earthquake is considered the biggest in the region in the last five years.

This event follows other natural disasters in the broader region. Less than two months before this earthquake, a flash flood caused by a glacier collapse in a border region of Nepal and Tibet resulted in many deaths and destroyed communities. Chinese researchers have warned that climate change is speeding up the loss of glaciers across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which could increase the risk of future disasters.

Tectonic Plates

The Earth's outermost layer, called the lithosphere, is broken into several large pieces known as tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving, though very slowly, floating on the semi-fluid layer beneath them. When these plates collide, pull apart, or slide past each other, they can cause earthquakes, volcanic activity, and the formation of mountain ranges.

Earthquake Magnitude

Earthquake magnitude is a scientific measure of the energy released at the source of an earthquake. It is typically measured using scales like the Richter scale or the moment magnitude scale. A higher magnitude number indicates a more powerful earthquake. For example, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake releases significantly more energy than a magnitude 6.0 earthquake.

Emergency Response Levels

Governments and organizations often have different levels of emergency response plans for disasters. These levels help them decide how much help and resources are needed. A 'level-II emergency response' means a serious situation that requires a significant amount of coordination and resources, but it is not the absolute highest level of emergency.

Check your understanding

  1. What is the primary cause of earthquakes?
    • Volcanic eruptions
    • Movement of tectonic plates
    • Strong winds
    • Heavy rainfall
  2. What does a 'shallow earthquake' mean?
    • The earthquake occurred in a body of water.
    • The earthquake's origin point is close to the Earth's surface.
    • The earthquake was not very strong.
    • The earthquake happened in a flat area.
  3. Why is the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau's environment a concern for downstream communities?
    • It is a popular tourist destination.
    • It is a source for major transboundary rivers.
    • It has many tall mountains.
    • It is home to unique wildlife.
